Best RAM manufacturer?

DJ Big Lex 7:22 PM - 25 September, 2018
Gonna upgrade the RAM in my mid 2012 (non-retina) Macbook Pro (13", 2.9 Ghz i7, running Yosemite).

I bought it originally "maxed" out on 8GB RAM, but based on some research it seems it will successfully run 16gb even though its not technically supported by apple.

Anyone have recommendations for the best manufacturer? Kingston seems to have the best reviews on Amazon (they sell it for $137). Crucial and OWC come in a little cheaper ($130 and $120), and Samsung surprisingly for only $92 on Amazon.

Is Samsung RAM as good as Kingston? I don't care about the nominal price difference, just wanna get the best available.

Corsair. Not that any of the other brands you mention are bad, but I build and upgrade computers all the time, and I've always found Corsair products work extremely well. The one thing you don't need, is to spend extra for high speed memory. It makes almost no difference at all. It measures better in a lab, but in actual use you won't notice any difference.

Thank you!

What are you hoping to accomplish with the extra ram?

Better performance. I've had my laptop for 5+ years, and luckily its held up well, but sometimes I notice it struggles for a bit when doing anything memory intensive while spinning (for example, when auto saving while recording my sets, or running other apps when spinning, like if I need to download a song on the spot during a gig). I've had the laptop crash on me twice in the last few months (I had internet browser tabs open, which I've since stopped doing), and recently Serato crashed on me (with no other programs running). I plan on adding an SSD soon as well.

SSD will be the biggest jump in performance. With 512GB drives under $100 it might even be cheaper.

I have 16GB of Crucial in my 2012 so I can't complain about that brand.

Good point, thanks!

When I upgraded mu 2012 MBP, I bought 16 gigs of Crucial ram, and a 750 gig SSD and installed both at the same time. HUGE difference with both. However, popnwave is 100% correct, the SSD is the ticket. My MBP boots from off, to desktop in 13 seconds.

If you can afford it Samsung since they actually supply the parts to every other ram and video card manufacturer. Other than that, just follow specs specified on your macbook and dont always go for the cheapest ram.
