Rane 61 (Sixty One) lagging issue FIXED

trent von 10:36 PM - 6 November, 2019
A heads up for anyone trying to use legacy Rane hardware.

I've been using, evaluating, and troubleshooting a Rane 61 with SeratoDJ.

If you ask about the lagging issue with SeratoDJ and the Rane 61, Serato tech support will be quick to throw shade on the Mac OS, Mac OS 10.11.

Apparently this is the copy/paste explanation they offer on the issue:

In very simplistic terms, the load (audio + MIDI data) being placed on the USB port is exceeding what it can handle, so to prevent the audible stream from crashing completely, the OS is resetting the audio (and therefore introducing a significant delay) on the USB port to ease the load.
Theres no way to fully prevent this from occurring unfortunately, as this is a being caused by macOS/OS X - and is somewhat out of our control.

This is bullshit, and I'll explain why,

The Rane 61 was introduced in the ScratchLive era. It HAD to work then.

Then I thought, what if you use it with its native software Scratch Live, what happens? I'll tell you, it works, it works perfectly. No matter what the CPU load, no lagging, no weirdness.... it just WORKS.

I go back to report my results in an email reply and all I get is, "Scratch Live is not supported by Mac OS 10.11".

Yeah, I get that, but it still doesn't dispute my results.

1) I have Scratch Live installed in MacOS 10.11, with a few work around procedures with the "Terminal App"
2) Scratch Live was software that the Rane61 was originally designed to work with.

Serato finally acknowledged my results:

Hey there.
Indeed it is true that the Rane 61 was designed for Scratch-Live, even though support has been continued beyond it for Rane hardware.
Scratch-Live is usable above OSX 10.11, it's just that as it has not been tested on or developed for these operating systems and therefore we don't officially support it.
If you haven't encountered the latency issue on Scratch-Live then that's great - we cannot guarantee that it won't happen though - I must reiterate that this is a post OSX 10.11 issue that occurs on audio software generally - there's really not much we can do ourselves.
I hope this helps - and good luck with your setup.

Personally I LOVE legacy hardware. I love the challenge of making it work. You CAN make ScratchLive work with MacOS 10.11 and beyond. You can use that classic SL1 box. It's just that they don't make any money if you do (in my opinion).

In this game of "UPGRADE, UPGRADE, UPGRADE, I am here to tell you that you don't have to get caught up in the hardware madness to be competitive. You can still use legacy hardware.... you can still use SL1200s.... and you will still get hands in the air on the dance floor.

It's not so much that I need to be right. It's just so frustrating that other people do have same issues. Some are not as resourceful. Rather than tech support giving the right answer they would prefer that you buy newest latest. My answer is... hey, dumb ass, the customer already has a bad taste in their mouth. You can make a customer for life if this time around you just give the RIGHT advise. Now the guy thinks your product is buggy and will most likely not come back for later purchases.....

Install procedures for Scratch Live & El Captain OS10.11
Copied from another part of this forum

This Fix/Workaround might work for you guys...

1.) Download Scratch Live
2.) Restart your Mac holding down Command-R until the Apple logo appears.
3.) From the Utilities menu, select Terminal.
4.) In the Terminal window, type this:

csrutil disable

5.) Press Enter/Return. This turns off the part of SIP that will let you run a fresh Scratch Live install again.
6.) Type reboot and press Enter/Return to restart your Mac.
7.) After the restart you can install Scratch Live.

NOW IMPORTANT

8.) Restart again once you install holding down Command-R until the Apple logo appears.
9.) From the Utilities menu, select Terminal.
10.) In the Terminal window, type this:

csrutil enable

11.) Press Enter/Return. This turns back on the part of SIP you disabled temporarily.

11a.) I can't remember if I then deleted SeratoScratchDriver.kext again from Macintosh HD > System > Library > Extensions or just moved on to step 12.

12.) Turn on your 57SL and plug in the USB.
13.) Launch Scratch Live and hopefully you're back in action like I was, I'll update if this method stops working at some point.

Correct tech advice:

1) Downgrade your OS to the level that will take ScrachLive, then use that with the Rane61
2) You can use ScrachLive with OS 10.11. We don't recommend it, but there are work around that will allow you to install it.
3) This should fix your lagging issues.

Good info. Thanks for sharing. My 61 works great with scratchlive. Never given me a problem. However, when I use the 61 with Serato dj it for sure is not as stable and reliable. Sometimes it works perfect, but I’ve had Serato dj crash on me several times. On a side not Serato dj works perfect with my controller. It’s just the 61 that is not reliable with serato dj for me. I’ll give your work around a try. Thanks again.
