DJ AM in Detroit - the good and the bad....

DJ Art Pumpin Payne 8:10 AM - 9 September, 2007
The Good....

Just getting in from checking out DJ AM at Plan B tonight in Detroit. I was thinking of trying to put my writing skills to the test again and try and match the review mentioned here: scratchlive.net but I am too fucked up off of Coronas and shots to try and finesse and flex so this is what ya gets....

The club Plan B was a little different than I remembered when it Panecia, the DJ booth is now on a overhang above the dancefloor instead of stuck away in a enclosed room in the corner of the club. I got down there around 11:15pm and the club was pretty light, doors opened at 9pm.

When I arrived the VIP rule was in effect with bouncers on the stairs keeping people from going to the second level. I got Comp Tickets from a DJ buddy (Thanks DJ Tom T) who knew the promoter, but I didn't see any difference between those who paid the $20 general admission or the $30 VIP.

Around midnight, they got smart and lifted the restriction on the upper level so I went upstairs and got a good side view of the booth so I could check out AM. I was probably about 15 feet away on the side, close enough to see his scratch and turntable skills. A few people claimed the "good spot" right behind the DJ booth and stayed posted there all night.

The opening DJ (Captn20) had a pretty good set playing mostly Mash Ups in preparation for AM. He was rocking straight songs earlier (Dance mix of Ne-yo Because of You, some Fergie, other pop dance stuff) but slowly migrated to the mash ups as the night went on. The one thing that made me chuckle is that they didn't have a Mic so the old "ghetto style" fix was in effect. Plug the Headphones in the Mic input - hey it works in a pinch.

Seems that AM was on the superstar tip, because the opening DJ, Captn 20 kept doing pre announcements about AM (11:55 12:20, 12:45) but AM was no where to be seen. I felt a slight shift in his set after 12:30, he wasn't playing as hard or skillful, I guess he was pissed that AM was SUPPOSED to be playing by now but was no where to be seen.

At about 1:05, two guys enter the booth and tap the DJ on the shoulder, DJ AM is in the building (he shorter than I pictured, reminded me of DJ Godfather). Captn 20 pulls out a vinyl and they attempt to do a laptop switch. Some type of glitch happens (vinyl won't play - i guess) and the song ends. AM switched to internal, plays another song, pulls RCA's, and finally get the Vinyl to play for the laptop switch.

I was worried and critical what to expect of DJ AM's set because of what the other guy said in his post about playing the Power 106 set. AM did not disappoint tonight. He played for DETROIT. He was more "Hood and Rap" than I ever heard on any of his mixes on the Internet.

Although the drinks make it a blur - I heard, Jay Z, Jim Jones (Ballin'), and of course OUR theme song - Welcome to Detroit (Trick Trick and Eminem) - big ups on playing that one. The first 15 minutes or so were more Hood than Club Envy around the corner (man there were some HOT 1/2 dressed Hoochies going in there while I had my short wait in line).

As the night progressed, I really didn't hear too many predictable mixes. He went in a few different directions and even dropped some Ghetto Tech - Juke cuts - and some B-more at one point. The only trademark AM mixes I heard were the Queen Bite the Dust into Journey - Don't Stop Believing mix and of course a work out on the Mike Jackson - Momma- say (sp). He even had the crowd singing along on a few cuts.

Seems that the night ended abruptly, at about 2:20, he was told to cut the music (flyer said 9pm - 4am). I though a fight had broke out or something. His boy started pulling the needles, he closed his Mac and that was it. Captn20 got on the "headphones/Mic" gave AM his props and that was it.

The Bad....

I had to go pick up some money after 2:30am from a promoter for a House night that help with (I work under a co-promoter - long story). He had called me earlier today and asked if I could spin a R&B/Rap set tonight and I told him I had plans to see DJ AM so no dice tonight.

Turns out that the House night had to shift to a Rap/R&B set because Jay Z was making an appearance at the venue. There was no money since there was no House, (no my problem - I just work under a co -promoter) BUT the bad part was that if I had agreed to do the R&B/Rap set I could have been spinning for Jay -z and his crowd.

Oh well...

I still think seeing DJ AM was worth missing the Jay-Z opportunity. I learned a few things and it inspired me to step up my game (HOPEFULLY) with this Serato shit. To see a DJ push it to the edge of the full potential is inspiring.

The one thing that sticks in my mind that FUCKED ME UP is that he uses Serato in "DJ AM" mode all the time (Track names are hidden). I thought you guys were shitting about that but that is WHY it is called DJ AM mode.

Anyway...

Just wanted to share while this was fresh in my drunken mind.

Also forgot the camera but have crappy pics on my Treo camera phone. Will see how they look tomorrow.

G-night...

Thanks for the review! So you know I actually came to detroit to do a private party. That was it. It was from 9-12am and then i was gonna go to the telly and sleep. The plan b propmoters said "I dont care if he cant get there till 1am! We want him" So I was actually totally on time. It didnt cross my mind for a sec "Wait, people may buy tickets and show up and I'm not there till 1am???" One thing about me is I like to ALWAYS earn my money. I have done MANY parties where I am background music, and get paid. But nothing feels better then when you rip a room apart and the promoter gives you a check and says THANK YOU! you KILLED it. We all had so much fun." Makes me wanna brush my shoulders, head to the bank and go practice for next time. Sorry if you got a half ass show homie.

Like I said I had a few drinks so I can't remember much of what you played BEAT BY BEAT (like the other review) but I WAS IMPRESSED, I am NOT taking that away from you. As everyone on this forum knows DJ's are the WORST critics of OTHER DJ's but I kept my eye on you and on the FLOOR and you did your job and did it well. I am new to Serato and like I said you seem to push the edge of what the software can do,

Like I said BIG PROPS for coming with that much Rap & Hip Hop in Detroit. The crowd was 90% white or more and like I said, you could have been around the corner at Envy and had the ALL BLACK crowd going bananas with the set you dropped.

My ONLY big disappointment and this is going to sound cheesy as HELL - No WONDERWALL? That seems to be your trademark track and I don't think I heard it . I heard a Guns N Rose Sweet Child mash (That was what had 'em SINGIN!).

DJ AM not playing Wonderwall is like going to see Michael Jordan back in the day and he doesn't do the Dunk.

: )

Anyway, not taking thing away from YOU in my drunken review...

You kept the floor filled and you ripped it. Again you played for Detroit - BIG PROPS on that. Thanks for the explanation on the 1am thing (private party). Good look on that one.

Question: Why did end abruptly? Was it a club thing?
DJ Art Pumpin Payne 3:23 AM - 11 September, 2007
oops

Anyway, not taking anything away from YOU in my drunken review...

We need a EDIT BUTTON.

Somebody in Detroit had bank for a private party?? Man, I gotta start meeting some new people...
DJ AM 3:31 AM - 11 September, 2007
hahaha man I feel like I can never win! if I do something i did (see previous posts) its "AM did the same shit" which, duh, YES I DO! I am no superhero of creativity. I come up with something that works, and I do it. Straight up. Its not about me, my ego or the 1-2% of people in the club that heard my Power 106 mix, know what serato is OR are Djs. Its about the people dancing. I want the majority to have fun. If hip hop is working, I should prolly stick there, THEN try to push into somehting cool to really get em'. that can back fire though ahhaha it has many times. Anyway, I woulda done the Oasis as my lil "look, im not some fake ass celeb Dj, I swear i really can kinda mix a lil" and chicks like that song (as do I) but some hugge roided up security guard ran into the booth saying TURN IT OFF NOOOOOOOOOOOOOW so i did, and left. Jeah

I'm sooooo getting this printed on a t-shirt to wear to my Saturday spot. Then when I get yelled at for the music I play by the OMG I LOVE DJ AM owner, I'll just point to the shirt and continue mixing. :)

"Its about the people dancing. I want the majority to have fun. If hip hop is working, I should prolly stick there, THEN try to push into somehting cool to really get em"

That just made my job tons much easier. ...or I'll get fired.

LOL Cube I thought that was you flexing. I hear your are looking for a new Residency, I thought maybe you flew AM in for a few hours for some pointers on the Demo Mix CD (especially on a Saturday - you roll like that I guess).

: )

You are right, I was wondering who had enough bank to pull AM in for a private party ON A SATURDAY NIGHT.

Hmmm, I have a friend who used to do Mobiles back in the day and did a lot of Bar/bat-mitzvahs says they often up the game now to flex the Money.

Not saying this was the case but who's gonna top bring in DJ AM on a Saturday if that was the case?

Game over....

Other than that maybe Emenim had a little "get together" before heading to Vegas?

I guess there was some money in town because everyone was on the way to the VMA in Vegas? Maybe Detroit was the Pit stop?
dj cubicle 3:52 AM - 11 September, 2007
When's Kwame's birthday? Our tax dollars hard at work??

Calvin Johnson? He must have a lot of zeroes on his bank account now.

It was probably some sweet 16 party that will be shown on MTV this Fall. :)

...and, Art, you don't even know how I missed out. I got my residency at Studio 4 about six weeks after AM was there, otherwise, I might have been the one opening. LOL
DVDjHardy 3:57 AM - 11 September, 2007
Haha, at least cube can get some pointers from him on how he dealt with Reece for a whole night without wanting to beat the shit out of him....LOL!

Nice review btw, Art! We need to hookup AM with the entire DATABASS collection so we can get some decent exposure outside of the D.

All I gotta say AM is YOUR A F*CKIN ROCKSTAR and a cool ass dude to come in here and answer to posts people have thrown up here about you! Shows alot about you as a person and from what friends of mine have said, your down to earth and cool (if u can get past the multiple people hogging up the room around the booth or the SECURITY)....

Hope to meet u one day, it'll have to be a day when u DJ with David Savior or some other cats I know out here in the Bay.

One Love

Now, that's what I am talking about.

Our newest genre is DYING in our own backyard and since B-more is on the rise, it can parallel again like House and Techno did back in the day.

It's now or never.

Saw you at mur.mur on Labor Day weekend. I went with my boy Basara (Mixx resident). I'm sure you know, but, you're twisted man, twisted. that place went nuts when you dropped "ain't no fun" and "money, power, respect".

I need to update my site! :)

One of the guys (Jon) who owns The Hills is a friend of mine. He used to spin with me at Necto actually and opened up that bar this summer. I was doing videos over there on the huge plasma wall but that is a ridiculous drive to make twice a week no matter how much they pay you!

I just wanted to clarify that I never intended any disrespect to AM. I thought I had made it clear in my previous post that despite repeating some previous mixes, which is obviously an ubiquitous behaviour for all DJs, AM clearly rocked the house. My opinion, and the opinion of other DJs who were there who had previously heard some of the mixes, is certainly irrelevant to the goal of crushing it in the mix, making girls dance, and people enjoying themselves. For the record, I thought he was amazing and hearing some of those mixes live is still a totally different experience. Perhaps I should have been more clear in this regard. AM, please check your messages. Thanks.

Most DJ's fall in love with songs and mixes we repeat them alot.... There is no DJ that cant say he aint never repeat a mix, especially if U spin alot... If u a bedroom DJ then U can create all types of stuff in the house, cuz there isn't a audience but when u spinning for a crowd of drunk, horny, overly dressed people, U stick to what is hot and then u slide some unexpected shit on them and see what they think. DJin' is a guessing game. U gotta think on ya feet, some people may hate and be like i heard that mix before, I say well damn stop following me to every Venue or stop listening to my radio show, and come back in a couple weeks. Maybe i've changed by then.
sixxx 6:41 PM - 13 September, 2007
I wouldn't say "No DJ" cause I know damn sure I don't play pre-planned sets... EVER. Never have. Never will. Not even during actual shows. If I'm doing a new hip hop show or whatever and I want to drop something pre-planned (which is a rarity in itself) I will do something new and specific for THAT PARTICULAR SHOW. Something that these DJ's who repeat themselves don't do. It may be for a lack of time or whatever. I understand all the reasons behind doing it. Lack of time, Lack of creativity, or whatever.
AMF 6:44 PM - 13 September, 2007
I'm with you Sixx... I've never did a pre-planned set either. But then again I've never been offered $10 grand to be dope either.
sixxx 6:49 PM - 13 September, 2007
I understand the mentality behind doing pre-planned sets though. For instance, AM is famous. I'm sure he's not just sitting around on the decks practicing and doing that. Yeah, he's gotta practice I'm sure but there's probably all kinds of shit he has to deal with now that he's famous. So, there goes less time to practice and come up with new shit. That's what I believe. I could be wrong though.

I don't care if they paid me $100 or $10,000. I don't like doing pre-planned shit. And, if I do, it has to be specific for that ONE show and ONE SHOW ONLY, be it radio appearance, concert, etc, etc, etc.
DJ Limelight 7:48 PM - 13 September, 2007
^^ I got a nice to chunk to play a 4 hour set and the promoters told me specifically what they wanted in terms of genres and certain songs. For the money they paid me, I pre-planned a lot of it because they were specific with their wants. Then I've had promoters in other cities say, "you gotta do that such-and-such" mix", even though I've done the mix over and over. It's a catch 22, because of you come up with some hot shit people want to hear it again sometimes.
sixxx 7:56 PM - 13 September, 2007
Good point Limelight. That's when it gets tricky. Cause, now you have a routine that they know... but how do they know it in the first place? Cause you probably have done it a lot.

What if you said, but I came up with a better one and it's fresh: Food for thought.

ithink there's a difference between playing pre-planned sets and pre-planned mixes...

Some tunes just mix really, really well together or flow into each other really nicely - some are only discovered after hours of mixing or practicing or just freestyling so it's only natural that a DJ wants to play that mix more than just once.

Lets face it, from a creative standpoint, the mix/blend/flow is one of the few outlets that DJs can put their own stamp on otherwise you're just some dude playing other people's music.

I'll never pre-plan a hiphop/top40 set, but there are definately some mixes that I do that are sort of my "signature" mixes. Obviously some of them are also done by other DJs because they are obvious mixes, some I've never heard another DJ do and am proud to call my own (though I'm sure somewhere some other DJ is doing the exact same thing and calling them his own.)

What I do to keep things fresh is, if I come up with a cool mix, I come up with different ways to do it so it doesn't get stale...an example of this would be the following mix that I do in a few different ways:

White Lines (grandmaster flash) to Let's Dance (David Bowie) mixed on the Arpegiated "Ah's"

White Lines (grandmaster flash) to Elevate My Mind (stereo MCs) on the "higher baby" sample.

Twist and Shout to Let's Dance to White lines on the arpegiated "Ah's"

That way I have a few different ways to get through the white lines track, so that when people hear white lines they won't say, "I bet you "Let's dance" is next.

That's what works for me anyway.
dj_soo 9:00 PM - 13 September, 2007
When I work with my partner Wood (no homo) on 4 decks, we plan out routines that utilize the 4 decks to the maximum (blends that use 3-4 records/songs) and use those as particular sections in our sets in between freestyling.

I totally believe in freestyling and playing to the crowd, but at the same time, I also believe in working out stuff if you're a DJ that really likes to mix and blend... I just treat routines as if they were individual songs and drop them in when I feel it's appropriate...
sixxx 9:55 PM - 13 September, 2007

I don't care if you got this from someone else, because it is funny enough to be played more than once, just like a good mix that you have come up with.

I don't pre-plan my sets, but I do have certain mixes that I will use more than once. I make a point to not use that same mix for a few sets after that, though, so even if you hear it one week, it will be a month before you hear those 2 or 3 songs in a row again. Consider also that I play several genres, sometimes getting booked for dnb, sometimes for breaks, sometimes for hip hop, sometimes for all purpose get-down-good-time party music.

MAN that must have been some Mad Money.

AM - Did that pay off this month's rent payment on LAX Vegas or what?
