HELP: New Macbook vs Macbook Pro (Serato)

Dinasaur 2:59 PM - 15 October, 2008
How`s it going pple. Quick ? RE: RScratch Live/Ableton live. Macbook vs Pro. Im thinking of buying a dedicated laptop to run Serato Scratch Live & Ableton live on (which of these two would be a better option). PS: It would be solely used to run Serato + ableton live. I know a lot of pple are using the Macbook pro but is it really necessary if im only going to be running just the two programs. Thanks

Tech Spec (New Macbook im looking @)

2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 10066Mhz DDR3
320gb @ 5400rpm

Any info would be much appreciated

It'll be fine for serato, however you might have some issues with ableton. They did not take music production into account when building these notebooks. Here's a good article about the new MB & MBP's shortcomings...

Thanks for that ^.

Come on pple. I know there must be a few pple using Macbooks on this board.

There are plenty of people, myself included using macbooks. The answer is that for serato virtually any MacBook will be fine. Don't even trip on specing it out. The .3ghz difference is not worth paying for and their ram is ungodly expensive as is their hd. Both are easy to swap. I'm going on 9 months with a 2ghz blackbook 2gb ram (till June I was only on 1gb) without a single dropout or crash or slowdown.

The only question for serato is whether you can lve with a 13in screen or want a 15in.

Ableton I can't answer but as far as I've seen, macbook and the pro are virtually the same in real world performance in everything but video intensive tasks. If you're looking at a new aluminum MacBook even that doesn't apply anymore.

Thanks 4 that elite...Looks like Abletons not used alongside S Live that much on these boards.

use a macbook pro with serato, ableton live and even reason and it runs fine.
specs: 4 GB mem
250GB HD
intel chip.
I even record to garage band while playing fron serato with no problems or glitches.

Cheers sir...Wanted to know if the new Macbooks would be able to run the two programs with little or no problems. If I got a macbook pro i`d be tempted to load it up with all these other programs reason etc & it seems a gamble if its the same notebook u`re taking out to the clubs. PS: Are the majority of pple doing just that ? (lol) or they have a dedicated notebook (serato).

Well I do production and DJ'ing(serato) on my macbook pro and I have no problems, thats what I bought it for, Itake it out to clubs and parties, I back up my stuff on HD's and DVD's. The most important thing to me is my files. If I could afford it I would buy another Macbook Pro or I would buy a a desktop to leave at home and do production. I have 2 other PC's that I use to store stuff or record to pro tools but the mac is so efficient that i find it hard to putdown. I don't find carrying my macbook pro on the road risky it just depends on how you treat it.

my MacBook does just fine with
Serato with VSL
Ableton Live
Photoshop CS3
Premier CS3
Soundbooth
Illustrator
And so on.
I can have all the adobe apps open and nothing ever hangs up. Two friends of mine are ableton junkie and they walk around everywhere with their MacBooks and novatoon midi keyboards. Almost all performers that we have hosted in Humboldt that use ableton have been using MacBooks, not MBPs. smooth as butter

Music to my ears lol. Looks like I underestimated the 'Mighty Macbook' (touch wood).

Hey, just a question for ya, does your macbook work smoothly with video SL ?

Cuz i got the Black MacBook and i'm wondering if it'll work fine with video-SL or if i'm going to have to switch to a newer macbook...

Thanks for the help...

worked fine, with limited effects.

big difference between the MB and MBP on performance though. my MBP is a 2.5 but with only 2GB of ram and the 512 video card. It doesn't skip a beat

I would get occasional audio dropouts using VSL on the Macbook, so my buffer was always up at 10
