they seem cool to me..I wouldnt really say that we have a huge base for dj'ing in dc as compared to otha places..like bmore has mad djs....we have some that are great but for the most part the djs are ok...if my opinion even matters

I spin at LIV Niteclub each and every Tuesday for the chill-mode-into-party-time happy hour set (followed by a weekly showcase/open mic feat. comedians, spoken word artists, & a live band) hosted by one of the DOPEST local groups "Gods'illa", and every first Thursday of the month I'm the resident DJ for an event called "Cake & Kisses" - this month will feature Tanya Morgan & Exile (of Blu and Exile). LAST month we had Homeboy Sandman, 8th 1, & P.So, and the month before that we had INVINCIBLE from Detroit.

DJ RItmo, you said you haven't been in DC in 2 years, who told you there weren't any DJs who are "really that good" ? - MY crew rocks, and no diss to DJ Nyce, but my crew isn't part of the Radio One DJ conglomerate. DJs like ESKIMO, TRU, 2 Tone Jones, RBI, MACHETE, SCIENTIFIC, HOSTILITY, OSO-FRESH, STYLUS, CUZZIN B, & DJ JAV!!!

Swyft, I'm mostly hip hop/ R&B (Old & New for both), Classic House, Reggae, & even Gospel. I usually give the people what they want (Or pay for... LOL), but do what I have to to keep the party poppin.

I also got into video mixing about a year ago. I posted some of my mixes on vimeo.com. Check them out. Kind of gives a flavor of my style. Not much turntablism, but good blending and song choices.

i was considering joining or doing my own stream for promotional purposes...just so busy at the moment havent had the time to make it a reality

I have a Ustream channel, but have not been playing online much. I need to change that right away.

I'm just thinking outside the box here. Maybe some of us here in the area can collab on doing a channel together. Multiple DJ's different styles, formats, day's, nights, whenever.

How is the music scene in DC? I'm probably going to be moving there soon and thinking about getting into gigs there.

From my experience in college when DJing for predominately NoVA crowds they aren't really open to music they've never heard. Well at least for Asian NoVA heads. When I used to drop old school tracks on them I'd get "the look" and clear the dancefloor. I'd get constant requests for trance which I hated. But it's been at least 5 years since then.

I am down, Remy. i think we should do a meet and greet or something first with everyone and see how many folks are involved. Maybe we all meet up at someones club(Residency) or a buffalo wild Wings type spot and bring some ideas to the table. Im ready to help and be on the committee, we just need to know how many people are interested. Maybe we can get Sam Ash or guitar Center to sponsor something, i have seen it done in Atlanta they put on a expose(Showcase of DJs) they had classes going on, taught DMX lighting, Equipment etc. Like I said yall let me know. I got a gig on the 4th of June and I will be in ATL on the 11th of june. Im free after that.

I have a few go go classics to play a short 10-15 min mini set but I can't keep up with Go Go music mainly because everything is so hard to find. All go go stuff is live and even the CD's are labeled like UCB 10-05-2010. So you really have no idea whats on the CD until you listen to it.

Although I haven't done it, I think you can go to Arundel Mills where there is a cart somewhere in there that sells a lot of Go Go music. You can probably go there and ask for whatever is hot to get your collection up.

I heard of that cart. I have no idea which one it is though (You know how many carts sell music / movies / etc. in Arundel Mills? LoL!) + I would still have no idea what is good and to get. I've talked to some DC locals and it seems like GoGo isn't nearly as popular anymore. It's still around but it's not as prevalent in the party scene as it used to be. I think a big part of it is because most venues do not want Go Go bands due to the rowdiness and sometimes violence associated.

I hoped Go Go would blow up like Bmore Club did but I believe it didn't because it's 100% live music. You can't just make Go Go music in ableton or throw a loop on an acapella and call it go go. Bmore blew up because ANYBODY can make a Bmore track on their computer.

Theres rare times Go-Go gets to the masses "Da Butt" and "Let Me Clear My Throat" being the big tickets. You also rarely get the Go-Go influence to a mainstream release like Amerie's "1 Thing", Wale's "Pretty Girls" and even Jill Scott's "It's Love". Theres some good tracks out there that can appeal to the crowds outside of the Mid-Atlantic but for a lot of people its a hard sale.

I haven't been to Dimensions in years, but Music Liberated was across the street from there. When Bernie died, Dimensions got all the stuff from Music Liberated. At the time of it happening, the prices were getting real crazy. Technics had his store across the street from both those stores and shortly after that not much of the newer stuff was being pressed on vinyl as frequently.

I might be able to make it there depending on what's going on. They had listening stations and a turntable setup there, but usually only the employees would be on the decks. This was years ago though, so I'm not really sure what's the deal now.

I like the setup of the club, i like the ability to do video in there. The crowd is a little to young for my taste but it can pay the bills. I can tell they put a lot of money in that club, and the security in there all look like pro wrestlers.

Didn't even know that. That include Mosaic as well?

By the way, I don't know who was promoting Dubai earlier this year (in January) but they turned me off from that club real fast. I hope my experience doesn't speak to how the club is on the norm but you can't have people (especially the ladies) standing outside of the club IN SNOW past 11:30PM because "the promoters aren't [there] yet". Charge $10 a head and let people in. You all are messing up your own money.

One of the DJs was unable to make it to DJ one night, and begged me to come play becuase his car was broken into or something. Within mins I grab my stuff load the car and at the club NLT 1 hr from the club. I left all my stuff in the car, walk and ask for the guy he told me to ask for. I say "who are the folks that I need to talk to about getting paid" They said I need to take it up with the DJ. I call dude back he says no the pay him at the end of each night. I go back to the guy and tell him the deal, he says "Well I will pay you $80" " He said you can play from 9pm to 12pm and another DJ will come in. I asked him what do they pay the regular DJs he said we only pay $150 for the entire night. Needless to say I made it back home in time to watch the rest of HBO boxing...LMAO

Fuk the promoters around here they do shitty business point blank. Get your rep and image up and trust they will come to you. I'm all about paying dues but in order to fuk with these promo teams have they ass sign a contract deal I bet they run away from you cause your too professional. They pull that crap with the radio DJs. If you meet a decent promoter that's look but ever try conduct business with a promoter in the club. Your better off getting 20 people to roll with you so the promoter is scared and just pays up cause he don't want his eye blacken

300 people SRO ain't bad for a start, and, from my observations, people tend to give the DJ outside more play than the one inside.

I thought so too. Porkchop DJ's at TGI Fridays in Baltimore County and brings a crowd in there every Tuesday. I checked him out a few times over there. It was pretty cool.

None taken. It was awkward when I 1st heard the concept too, but I moved down here from NYC and paying my dues in the DMV. TGIF's been doing it for a while all over, but this one (Columbia) has a different demographic than most. As far as I know it's the only 1 doing video mixing though.
I just started there in late September and building my crowd. There's not much advertising on their part so sometimes the crowd is hit or miss. There's always some joints stopping through. I kind of see it as the pre-club spot. For some it is the club... LOL.

just keep in mind, I won't be there this week, but my man is filling in.
Fridays is definitely an acquired taste. If the mood is right you might just forget where you are. I find the crowd that comes there tend to like the 90's to 2000 hip hop and R&B... maybe even some house. Some young bucks that work there like the newer stuff and I rock that also.

If it happens to be a dead night I can play around with a few tracks and practice new turntable techniques, but still give a quality show.

1 thing I can say is THE CHECKS ARE ON TIME (Direct Deposit Style). It can be a bit of a headache, but it's worth it.

The whole restaurant mixing concept is new to me as well. I hear PorkChop brings in a nice crowd in the Fridays in Owings Mills, I also know that there is a regular DJ at Loafers in Catonsville, Route 40 and it's packed on weekends! I do mobile events and I have a couple in-stores around Baltimore and beyond, the beauty in that for me is that I play what I want and the crowd seems to appreciate it. I try to create that club atmosphere in a store, people love that! Woodlawn in the house! Born in Bmore City though, will rep Bmore till the death of me!

Been living in the Baltimore area since '87. Got my first radio gig as a part of the Strictly HipHop family on 88.9 WEAA FM from '92 - '96 along with Vinnie V. Also was the 1st DJ on the Friday Night Jazz Club on the same station, which is now being done by DJ Lil' Mic. Also worked at Radio One-Baltimore as a Board-Op/ Producer. I've done guest spot mixes on Magic 95.9 FM w/ KW Griff and also on the Big Phat Morning Show w/ Marc Clarke & Troy Johnson before DJ Spontaneous was the regular mixer on the show. I was the Urban Promotions Director for Mid-Atlantic Dance Promotions (Record Pool on Maryland Ave in Baltimore). I am currently a regional manager for the Bum Squad DJz (Mid-Atlantic chapter). I do mixes for Hot 103.5 WHWT in Huntsville, Alabama every other Friday from 10p-Midnight CST/ 11p-1a EST. I also spin every other Saturday at XS Baltimore on Charles St. (A block down from the Penn Station train station). I recently also got with Azul 17 (Tequila Bar & Mexican restaurant in Columbia). I will have my debut this coming Saturday during Cinco De Mayo. OK, I'm getting off of the soapbox. Continue on with your thread......

"I'm not looking for any hand holding. But I don't have anyone to bounce ideas off, practice with and improve on the skills I have. I've pretty much taught myself everything I know in the past 11 years i been DJ-ing. I'm good at beat matching, mixing, and song selction. Things that I need to work on? Scratching. I mean I got a good baby scratch which gets me through. But I'd like to develop more in that area. So if there's anyone in the DC area who would be down to help me continue to develop, get at me."

I moved to the DC area a little less than a year ago and I'm really considering getting back into club gigs. Besides the usual top 40 radio hits, what is popular for a mixed DC crowd? Like say you are DJing for the crowds in Dupont along Conneticut ave.

Like for example in Hampton Roads reggae and 90's R&B is very popular. What kind of niche subgenres/old school/unexpected tracks really reasonate with the DC crowd? I get bored spinning a strictly top 40 playlist like and like to deviate from the normal expected hits but still get the dancefloor going.

Since not everyone has a facebook I guess I will use PMs for those guys

I just confirmed with the wifey that the 19th of August should be fine but remain flexible if you can because there is small chance that it may slide to the next Sunday which is the 26th of August

Since we have enough people going can a few guys volunteer to cook on the grill. I can cook so I will be on the grill as well. If you want to volunteer just PM so I can put you down for it.

You can bring your own DJ rig if you want I will have 2 available to use but I think 4 rigs would be the best.

Everyone else you have to bring your own laptops I only have 1 laptop for DJing.

I suggest bringing your laptop and maybe some control vinyls or regular vinyl if that's your thing

There will be no CDJs

I only have
2 DJ mixers
4 turntables but one is down so that leaves 3
I'm hoping someone can bring another turntable and another setup

This is the first jam so it will be learning experience for everyone involved

Big ups to Remy. Big ups to his wife for inviting us to jam in the crib.The food was great. The jam session was great. Remy I had a wonderful time and so did AlScratch that was our first jam. It was nice to meet you in person right along with PM, Ruel(showed off some quick skills and some red bull lol),Kadilac (thats a whole bother story lol) some one else showed up but I didn't catch his name. It was a lot of food and mad drinks. You was a big part of that session.

Hey Westell54, I def did research on various sites... Although I started off with mixtrack pro and VDJ I wanted to learn (and still do) how to work actual turntables and use Serato (industry standard right lol) . However, I had NO desire to lug around those huge Techniques or any other kind of turnables when I had gigs... so Insert NS7 which might I add I found on craigslist for a affordable price. #sold

Thats my story.. lol I really love them, and when I practice the transition b/w the NS7 to my Turntables they aren't that bad #winning #cheers lol ... I just wish I had a fx bar to go with my NS7.

here's a tip: export your history as csv, open and re-arrange or delete the the columns you don't need. copy artist and title columns. when you paste in mixcrate, choose tabs and it will auto populate.

I just came across this thread surfing the Forum but I live in the 757 currently but commute between DC and Baltimore from time to time. Lived out Arundel Mills but working in Baltimore City between 09-11. Networked with a few djs but didnt spin to much out there cause I was coming down here every weekend djing. Anyhow I defintely want to meet more fellow djs and make some things happen up there. I see the last few threads talking about Club music which Im big on and love to life. I need some new club joint I really wish there was a bigger market for it cause the tracks are simply amazing. Im a big House head too Soulful, Jazz, & Latin.

From what I can remember, there are 2 versions of this song. The original (the one I am more familiar with) is on the Hardhead/Unruly label and the artist is labeled DJ Snoopy feat. Lil' Mama. I think I remember a Dukeyman remix of this song, but I don't have it.

i've spun at a few embassies in DC. they all had 'ballrooms'. ambassadors house may have a large room to host guests or the they may be spread around the house.

if they will be in a large central location then 2 k12's and a sub will definitely be enough. if they are spread out you will just have to worry speaker placement. (2) k12's maybe be enough tho.

Has anybody done a gig at Tall Cedars in parkville md, it's a hall if so does it hold up to 650 people cause that is what the client is saying. I just want to confirm that.

What's up everyone! Just moved to the area from SF Bay and interested in networking with some fellow DJs out here and start performing. Did this when I was in San Diego for school and met some awesome people.

I've been spinning since '02 in Cali, NC, and Europe - it's hard to get established tho when you move every couple years! Bars/clubs, lounges, school dances, weddings, corporate events, house parties...I've done it all!

I used to go through Seat Pleasant from D.C. to get to Hyattsville. But I've never been to Iverson Mall (or Temple Hills for that matter). Is it really that bad?

Hey guys - just got my first gig in DC since moving here and since all my stuff is still in CA, I need to rent some sound equipment for Thursday night. Two speakers, cables, stands, and amps if necessary are all I need. No lights or sub. If anyone has any gear I can rent or has recommendations of where to rent in the Northern Virginia/DC area, that would awesome!

Been spinning for 11 years and have worked with all kinds of systems and it'd be my personal promise that I'd take amazing care of your stuff! Would like to use QSC K/KW if they're out there, but otherwise, as long as they look professional and sound good, I'm not picky.

Central Electronics is off Central Ave near Fed Ex Field. Pro Tech is probably the best place for decent service. Chuck Levins is good primarily if you're spending a lot of money on a frequent basis (especially with Anoosh) and they're bigger. Randy is cool and was good about responding to emails because they can often times get quite busy.

We got some real cool dudes here but since P.G. got pretty much shut down as far as parties and clubs go, it's a ruff time in the business.

Everybody scared to go across the bridge to VA cause you can drive into VA but goooooood luck driving back out!
Charles county is just as bad if not worse.

In the District, venues have decreased. There just ain't enough clubs anymore. Not only that but there are some cheap ass club owners that feel a Dj is only worth $150 / $200 (FUCK THAT)!
They even want the dj to pull double duty and play the part of promoter too.

It ain't all about ego's but more about cutthroat, undercutting, low level (skill) dj's trying super hard to get into the very limited venues.

Dudes is thirsty!
venues are severely limited.

I live in Charles County, and have always wondered where all of the DJ's are that live in this area, but I very rarely run into any at the local music stores down here. They few that I have tried to connect with seem to try to measure you based on whether you're a threat to their business or not, but I only do it as a pretty serious hobby, so I've never really understood that perspective. I don't pretend to be very good at all and I really only do it because I enjoy it, so I enjoy learning from other DJ's and will offer what ever knowledge I've picked up over the years to anybody willing to listen. I have lived in this (DMV) area since 2001, and it is really difficult to connect with a lot of DJ's because it has always been sort of dog-eat-dog here.

A-Beezy has been out to my house a few times, and I believe his intentions are very sincere. The thing is, trying to plan and organize such a task by yourself is VERY challenging and time consuming. This will be something that should start small, and build as you get support from other DJ's, because the people that show up on day one, may/may not come back. Everyone has different intentions and expectations, so you have to allow for things to peak, and then as the dust settles, you'll have a dedicated group of like-minded people.

My busy family life doesn't allow for me to get out as often as I used to but I would be interested in trying to make it out to one of your jam sessions. You have the same set up as I do, but I did just get a set of Light Wave speakers that I could bring out just for fun. I'll keep tracking this to see how it comes out.

I still appreciate your putting that event on a few years back. Not many people came out, but we definitely had a chance to meet, greet, jam, and laugh. I've gotten to come see a few people play out from that event as well (including yourself). I'd be willing to put together something if I can find the time and space to do it in.

There's a constant request for services that constantly appears on the D.C. Craigslist page that advertises a monthly show for which they need a DJ on U Street at 11th between 7 and 10PM... for NO PAY. They keep advertising this every single month, and have done so for nearly a year without a single DJ ever taking the event (or so I assume based on the repetitiveness of the ad -- washingtondc.craigslist.org).

Unfortunately, this describes a significant chunk of the area. Every time I look at these groups on Facebook (some of which have over a thousand members each), I see the same people tearing down new DJs, or riding out their anti-sync-button-vinyl-only-I-been-around-for-30-years community kleenex and lubriderm session.

me being a native I totally feel like Im outsider in my own city. I get booked and I get plenty of shine I think its more that everyone wants to seem bigger than they are but I go check them at their gig but I rarely get that support myself. Its a good ole boys system here and Im just not with so I.R.A (I ride alone)

I'm organizing a new event series called The KUT. These parties will feature up and coming EDM DJs who aren't playing out, but who are ready to throw down! Working DJs are welcome of course.

House music spots:
Soundcheck (Wednesday, Thursday's, Subdays)
Flash - Everyday house music
Lost Society - Wednesday
L8 - new venue but has that house lounge vibe
18th Street Lounge - Check their schedule it's the best venue always cheap music always great and there is no VIP or bottle service there so it's 100% about music.

Best venue was Paradox they are closed now

Best lighting
That's tough DC doesn't have great light shows except for Echo Stage and Soundcheck and L8 which are all owned by the same people. DC is a lounge city mostly the big night club scene is gone

Deep Sugar is still doing a few more parties at the Paradox through the summer even though it has "closed". June 25, July 30th and August 27th. If you haven't been do yourself a favor and hear a real analogue sound system with Levan Horns, flown bullet tweeter arrays and that old school vibe.

There are some boogie, house and disco nights at Songbyrd in Adams Morgan.

I think Flash has the best sound in DC but the vibe is very bottle service euro thug so I don't ever go. The system at Malmason is also nice.

Sundays at 18th Street Lounge are the real house music night.
