djperry 11:22 PM - 7 April, 2011
I am looking to get the new Macbook Pro to spin videos. (I am still using SL1 boxes and do not want to upgrade at this time. I am mixing on Pioneer DJM-700 mixers.)

Will I be OK with the new MacBook Pro?
aj5000 11:37 PM - 7 April, 2011
Yeah u should I haven't heard any problems with the SL one I'm having a ton of problems on my new Mac Pro and TTM57 no matter what I do my computer makes me force to shut down once I disconnect my mixer. I've shut down Sersto first and it does it I've disconnect first and does so I'm sticking to my old Mac Pro till there done with the beta for it to run on 64bit on the 57
skinnyguy 7:43 PM - 8 April, 2011
you may have to boot in 32-bit mode

Yes for the 57 but for SL-1 should work fine on 64bit. but again with me I boot on 32bit and still have the shut down problem so it's a waiting game for me but dam I love this new Mac :)

you gotta use 2.2 then it wont kernal panic when closing serato. Sucks because i don't find 2.2 as reliable as 1.9.2 (1.9.2 crashes anytime you try to close serato) SERATO PLEASE HURRY with the NEW RELEASE!
ClubBusta 12:34 PM - 10 April, 2011
did anyone have any problems with the defective graphics cards on macbook pros and your screens going black? mine did at the worst time!!! but mac fixed it for free cause its a defective hardware problem they said still didn't help me when it happened . if you have a macbook pro from 07 and 08 you should go to a mac store if u can and have them do a diagnostic so you don't end up like i did.
skinnyguy 8:29 PM - 10 April, 2011
I think you have to wait until it happens to bring it in

DUDE i have the first unibody and its the 2.93 ghz 17 go buy a used one they are rally cheep now! My friends with the i7's run way to hot and other bs issues mine runs cool and has never had one issue!! and anything over 2.8 ghz is way more than you will ever need so don't waste your money!

Nope. It may still KP.

So far here is what has kinda worked for me if your running anything other then 2.2 it will (KP) Kernal Panic when shutting down. So I'm running now 2.2 and video plugin 2.1 and that's has been the best results. Still not happy thou. computer seems to run a little to hot with video. I tried older video versions and and even tried 1.9 and 1.1 video witch is what I have in my old Mac and had bad resuts.
I think my problem could be the version of QuickTime witch is 10 that came with this computer or just that Serato & video plugin havent had enough work time with this new quad-core Intel Core i7.

So since I hate 2.2 I had to clone my harddrive in case I want to go back to my old
Mac and for now until I get this computer to work as good or better then my old
Mac I'm sticking to my with the old computer for video gigs.

If anybody has better resuts let's here it please!!! And please don't say ME I know ME runs better but I rather get this shit handled first before bring in another program into the mix

Did you try installing Perian?
aj5000 4:24 PM - 12 April, 2011
Yes sir !!! No change
dj_joe_luv 12:56 AM - 13 April, 2011
Tried 2.2 and it was a problem after problem.Very happy with 2.0 with no problems
at all,But u have to completely reinstall 2.0 and make sure u have no other version
When u do it.
Second, Perian is a must have for me.Bing using it for awhile.
Last, All my work is done(Tagging) in I-tunes before I Load ScratchLive.
tomatoslice 1:27 AM - 13 April, 2011
aj5,

did you try smc fan control to keep the temp down?

How do u keep your computer from not doing the Kernal Panic when shutin down ?

Yes and it helps. but if my older Mac didn't needed it and this one does. I just feel like it's not running right like is working harder then it should and is a freaking Annoying.

I will keep testing and also try to do a fresh reboot and run 2.0 with 1.2 video and see if it runs better. will see becaouse for a quod core this thing should run like a champ and I'm still going to blame it on lack of time with it from Serato's part
tomatoslice 4:30 AM - 13 April, 2011
from what i recall, could be wrong, the older macs had less of a heat issue due to the fact that they actually had a huge vent in the back.

unibodies do not.

2.2 hasn't KP for me. Hopefully this will be a moot point soon.

You must be strictly using serato and no other software with that logic. Believe it or not, as time passes software developers will create programs that will utilize the higher specs (including serato & vsl). You obviously feel quite strongly about people "wasting" their money for some reason.

What is your cpu temp?

What do you expect from a quad core? It is more powerful, therefore it will produce more heat when stressed.
DJDAMNAGE 3:24 AM - 14 April, 2011
My cpu temp rises to around 75 degrees Celsius max when running Serato, mix emergency, and Pro-tools at the same time. My internal fans are running max at 6000rpm. According to many articles I've researched this temp is quite normal. If your computer automatically shuts down because of overheating then you have a problem. My main concern is the high temps may shorten the life of the hardware.
aj5000 2:51 AM - 15 April, 2011
K tonight I'll do my first run. Live at a club and heat is not my concern more of the fact that all this power and Serato doesn't run as good as my old Mac so will see how she does quod Core or not there is no excuse for how hot this things get fan should not be goin in full bast for little old serato
aj5000 9:54 AM - 15 April, 2011
K after a fresh re-format of my hard drive and a install of scratch live 2.2 and video plugin 1.2 as well Perian and using the Quick play convertor. Man this thing finally ran good no problems videos came out smooth and it didn't run hot at a all warm yes but not hot. Other then the little bugs 2.2 has. It still ran good. I even play a cd of the drive to see if it would cause problems but all good I'm so glad for a min i though I made a bad choice on this computer but now running great. Just need it to run on 64bit and I'll be a happy camper.

Thanks every for the help!!!!

I think you'll get the best in value and power with last years Mac Pro's and less head aches but if u want more power for the future then that 15" is money well spent. I love mine and I don't just use it for Serato that is a waste

Good luck on your purchase bro
