motivation to dj (non-monetary)

cappinkirk 9:01 PM - 12 June, 2007
what motivates you to dj & what are your goals each night (aside from money)?

for example, motivations can include fame, titties, recognition, fun & entertainment (providing or enjoying), education, experience, etc. what else?

are you doing it to eat? are you in it for the love? does the owner let you sleep there if you mix well?

your goals could be like breaking "x" new songs, being the first to rock a track, trying to clear out the dancefloor, etc. what else?

any long term dj goals? are you just killing time with it? are you gonna be the next flex?

to give an audience the kinetic energy to make their collection of molecules jiggle
Jonny G 11:59 PM - 12 June, 2007
To make the people dance and have a good time is the name of the game. There's no feeling like having a packed room with the crowd reacting with every track you play.
J0be 11:02 AM - 13 June, 2007
To keep fit.

You should see me scratch, it's like Tazmanian Devil on speed.

;o)

Really though, I do it because I love it. Get so much enjoyment from spinning to a croud.

it's neither

but i used to be motivated by the assumed fame ya got when i started my first club in 1994
then quickly learned noone cared who was dj'n yet only the music

then i kept at it cuz of the way i could see i was making my crowd move and feel

but nowadays

i won't dj for less than $100 for 3-4 hours

13 yrs ago i used to do 8 hours for about $75

I DJ for the love of music and, believe it or not, to stay young (in spirit!!). Love of the music goes a long way toward helping you read your crowd because you can see how they feel about what you play. Fortunately, I'm in a venue that expects mostly hot remixes of pop along with some house/techno/trance. Makes my "job" soooo easy. Yes, its fun to be known and recognized around town, and yes, its great to get paid to do something you do for free at home just because you like it. There are few greater feelings in the world than the bond you make with a dance crowd when you are all on the same vibe. And the proof is in the hoots & hollers & whistles when a mix pops.

And, just to keep you humble, just as many (or more) hoots & hollers when you f*ck it up ... and you will. It happens. Move on. :)

i usually get inspired when i'm out buying diapers at target, sometimes the muzak that they play in the elevators jogs my 80's memories

I like the feeling I get when I know I got the crowd going nuts on the dancefloor, just basically my love for music and the control us DJ's have on someone's nite is enough for me......

Not really a control freak, but I think most of you seasoned DJ's know what I am saying!

I DJ because I want to introduce music to people, whether it's new stuff or obscure, older tracks. The last thing I want to do when I go out is to hear the same crap I'd hear on commercial radio or TV. People also deserve a chance to get away from hearing the same thing everywhere they go. There's always better stuff out there, no matter what genre, and there's always room to toss in some familiar tunes to balance it out.

When I was younger, I always tried to impose my music at our family gatherings by taking over the boom box. I was also obsessed with wanting loud sound systems.

It was meant to be.
shiestO! 7:51 PM - 10 July, 2007
haha kase... your family was prolly like "little asshole and his rapper music"

good stuff.
dj_KaSE 7:55 PM - 10 July, 2007
Actually, yes lol

My brother used to call me Blaxican cuz I played so-called "black" music too much hahaha.

Nowadays, though, I'll play hip-hop as well as the Mexican classics.
djbriguy 8:11 PM - 10 July, 2007
I read this topic... and I thought to myself... damn, why DO I Dj?! It doesnt feed me, its just extra money to burn a hole in my pocket.. I have a long-term GF, so its not the t1tties... I do love the music i guess...

I suppose I just love doing it. When i look at my decks, they are dying to be touched. Everytime i come home, no matter what kind of mood i'm in I walk in my house and at least do a couple baby scratches and i walk by haha.

I guess bottem line, is i love the crowd reaction to what I'M doing. Once time i stepped back and looked around (while i was playing Janet Jacksons "Doesn't Matter" (mind you, this was 2001!), and towards the end of the track, it has that build up and the vibe of the track is, i dunno, a good mood feeling. Anyway, i stepped back and looked around, and said to myself "I'm doing this, all of that (people dancing, having fun) is because of me... only me"

I guess thats why i do it.

My mom asked me the other day, "do you wish you were black?" No, I just love the music and the beats. I can't get down with most white music (rock or alternative) My car will shutdown if I play that shit. My car and techs have soul power baby.
dj_KaSE 8:23 PM - 10 July, 2007
I won't do it for free unless I see potential for getting clients, or unless it's to support a very good cause, or unless it's for one of my favorite relatives.
cappinkirk 8:46 PM - 10 July, 2007
word sometimes its easy to look at it like work when I do it regularly so i wanted to see how other people make it fun again, sometimes its just a way of looking at it differently.

ideally i think it wouldn't be about loot like it used to be back in the paying-my-dues days and i would just get juiced about what my set would be while i was mowing the lawn or something...its all about otaku

"In modern Japanese slang, the term otaku refers to an overtly obsessive fan of any one particular theme, topic, or hobby."

en.wikipedia.org
DJ Cykophuk 9:13 PM - 10 July, 2007
time machine back to 1991 when I was racing bicycles, I used to go dancing 5-6 nights a week to keep in shape over the winter. I was the guy who wouldn't drink anything but water, but danced from open to close. Eventually, decided that I wasn't happy with the music, so I gave it a shot. Signed up for a battle, won, got the job, been spinning in the clubs since.

Why do I do it now? I'm addicted. I love the music, I love to make the dancefloor go berserk, I love to watch the crowd, I love to create an experience, I love nailing the perfect night when every mix you touch is gold...

The money, yeah its cool...but let me play what I want & I'm pretty easy going about the cash. Want me to play crap, it'll cost ya.

The girlies, love 'em but married with kid...so now they're my favorite spectator sport.

hmmm...good japanese word for it...michi
DJ Young Herrera 9:34 PM - 10 July, 2007
I DJ for b*tches and money.

By the way, what the hell are you guys talking about? Otaku and Michi?

Otaku isn't really slang. Its a regular word in the Japanese lexicon. It can mean an enthusiast..but that's a real stretch. The common usage is a geek or nerd, with a low connotation. Typically it is associated with being a pervert. as in:

千葉さんは本当にオタクですよ。彼はいつも変態マã
ƒ³ã‚¬ã‚’読んでるよ。

Michi means street, path, or way...

well dj young herrera may think that wikipedia (& contributors) & seth godin got schooled but not this kid

i sourced my quote and pasted it directly from the wiki. Author Seth Godin, marketing guru, also uses the term otaku to refer to someone who has a passion for a hobby (or they're crazy about something)

do a google or yahoo for "seth godin otaku" and see what comes up. it's probably beyond the scope of this forum but I think its interesting. regardless i'm not the one who came up with it, just an avid seth godin reader. thanks for your feedback dj young herrera.

I enjoy the art of DJing. Creating a mix of tracks that not only flow well into each other, but keep the audience captivated.
DJ Young Herrera 8:39 PM - 11 July, 2007
cappinkirk,

from the same wiki post, and I quote "Otaku (御宅, Otaku?) is a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive hobbies, most commonly manga, anime or hentai."

by the way, hentai means pervert.

not trying to be a dick, just trying to let you know that that godin guy's usage of otaku is wack.

from the same wiki: "It should be noted that the English term geek is not a precise translation of the Japanese otaku. Otaku has a significantly greater negative connotation than geek does in the West, especially as the term geek has become less derogatory. The term otaku in Japanese suggests a creepy, obsessive loner who rarely leaves the house. In English, geek can possibly suggest a person who may be socially awkward but who is also intelligent and may be fairly "normal" aside from their interest in certain typically 'geekish' pursuits (video games, comic books, computers, etc.). Otaku is closer in connotation to the English nerd, but the closest English-language analogue to otaku is probably the British English term anorak. Both of these English-language terms have more emphatically negative connotations of poor social skills and obsessive interest in a topic that seems strange or boring to others.

While otaku in English-speaking contexts is generally understood to mean geek or even fan, this usage is not widely known in Japan. Casual use of this term may confuse or offend native Japanese speakers."

By the way, are you a trekkie?
cappinkirk 9:02 PM - 11 July, 2007
thanks - i don't think you're a dick DJ Young Herrera. I'm not from Japan so i don't take any offense to not knowing Japanese. Either way a word can mean many things to many people.

For example...are you aware of the Otaku software company? it has nothing to do with anime.

www.otakusoftware.com

also here is a breakdown of the history of the word otaku. I don't try to be a single source for definitions because I didn't create the word, but maybe you're from Japan or something, in any case i didn't mean to offend you or any other Japanese-speaking people. Thanks for the heads up.

www.otakuunite.com

Also - No i'm not a trekkie the name was given to me for being a bit of a wisea$$ i think (verbally capping people). I also don't save any hoes either (if they wanna get saved they can go to church) but apparently some other "captain kirk's" out there are doing just that.
cappinkirk 9:11 PM - 11 July, 2007
if you don't want to read the otakuunite article i think the last sentence sums it up:

Otaku-ism may not be for everyone, but I think it has a lot of good to offer, and it certainly doesn't deserve the bad reputation so commonly associated with it. Even if the word "otaku" is lost forever to those who would use it to denigrate others, the otaku spirit--a spirit of exploration, innovation, curiosity, dedication, and individualism--will live on.
Audio1 9:14 PM - 11 July, 2007
Well besides making some money for hard work, I think its just party rocking, making the crowd hype, trying out new tracks, remixes, networking and having alot of fun with friends and family.
dj_KaSE 11:34 PM - 11 July, 2007
I mostly enjoy parties where the crowd and I feed off of each other's energy. These are the types of parties where I forget about the fact that I'm getting paid because the crowd and I are in the zone.
