the only thing you need to do it cut the power wire & add this www.ebay.com you could even leave it on the outside of the light , i prefer to put it inside tho……the battery is not connected ,you charge it than plug it in the adapter when your ready to use thats it

^^^ Yep... this DIY can save you a grip.
So Joee, do you have the solution to mounting the battery INSIDE the uplight casing? Overall, this solution seems pretty nice. I have a hard time justifying $2800 - $3k on the 16 Chinese battery/wireless uplights I ideally need for full-room wedding uplighting. You can probably get 16 of the 54W units + wicicle DMX wireless thingys for less than $1k. Nice Post!

I've found my self in rooms that have had a perfect square dance floor with plugs all around & two not working ……so would would have been a great looking dance floor with uplighting on sound mode
turned in to a room that was missing uplighting on one wall & didn't look as good as it should have…….problem solved
the only issue with this light is, you either have to leave it on one color / color fade @ a party…..or go one color in the beginning than manually switch to sound mode once the party gets going

Yeah but you only have to switch it once. So once the dance gets going you do round to each light. Shouldn't be a big deal or a deal breaker rather.

One of the lights i ordered came to me broken and they sent me a replacement that came with an external power cord. I'm going to buy one of the batteries you suggested and try it as is. If it works ill contact the eBay seller i got the light from and see if they have more of the lights powered by an external cord so i don't have to do it myself.

I basically just tested them today one at a time. No issues. Haven't got the battery packs, etc to make them wireless...
So, here's just a shot of what one of them looks like - different colors. Didn't take pics of every single color it makes.
Eventually I shall make a video I guess.
PS. There are several pics of the same color because these are iPhone pics and the color spread looks weird depending on where you select to focus - but rest assured the light actually spreads evenly along the surface, at it should.

About that battery though...
"This is a commonly mislabeled product found on ebay as well. It contain three 3.7volt li-ion batteries in series for 11.1 volts total. Each battery is rated about 2800 mah. So for a 12v device, this will probably do about 2500 mah or less. Testing yielded about 11.1 volts for 1 1/2 hours. So, it is an ok battery pack for 11.1 volt / 2000 mah, but not worth anything more.
"First, the switch is rated for a maximum of 3 amps, well below spec for a lithium ion battery. The cells are actually 3 3.7 volt, 4500mah cells (or that's how they've been labeled). So it is technically 11.1v 4500mah battery. Each battery has it's own PCM, which means it will eventually become unbalanced and perform well below spec. Most of the battery is empty space."
"knowing the limitations of li-ion batteries and how much these weigh, it is impossible for this unit to hold 9800mAH at 12V. But still a good deal, and the size is just right. If you search for just 12v Li-ion CCTV battery, you'll see that other vendors took the time to correct this. Undoubtedly, the chinese suppliers are banking on the general public's lack of knowledge about batteries."

ok i talked to the distributor i may have an inside line on these at a lower price point he said he's not really carrying the external power wall wart power supply anymore as the power supply wasn't that stable... however for the Mod you don't need it anyway. but it is a different fixture then the ones i have.

all that is needed for this mod are the battery pack and the connector that you have to put inside the light s1285.photobucket.com this light had a two prong plug that was replaced with this www.ebay.com

I got my light today (just got 1 to test, cause I had just order a lot of 10 up lights (par 86's) but my light doesn't have to 2 prong as mentioned above it has the removable IEC connection.
Can I still mod? If not this light I'll definitely try on the par 86's cause they have the 2 prongs anyway gonna keep y'all posted.

got you…..the plug isn't connected …..it the removable kind
you should still be able to do the mod….you just have to open the light & connect the + & - wire leave the ground out
exactly it will just require a little more work & solder ……sucks that they don't have the connected plug, it really makes thing easier

your lights utilize a external power supply i,e., wall wart hence the adapter plug works no issue mine use the standard nema connector in & out so you can daisy chain the fixtures with a special plug in on one side out on the other...got you…..the plug isn't connected …..it the removable kind

I currently have the ADJ RGB3, but seems not to work as printed with current light and mini kinta..
I'm limited in knowing about dmx altogether.

That's a good question. These lights came with DMX cables (albeit short) but I'm sure that there's a cheap controller out there that would add excitement to the 10 lights I bought when I don't want to necessarily just use them as up lights.

I have the ADJ Wifly Ne1 which has a generic RGB Profile that works great these are basic lights but the controller allows wireless control using a couple of wireless transceivers that way you can control 2 sides of the room simultaneously change color or put in sound to light mode...

Hey Joee, I can't for the love of me get them to work with my controller, I hook it up and it only shows red and green... The 'manual' is non existent. I can set the colors manually but once dmx is hooked up, most I can get is dimming and strobing.
No blue or anything, and the colors ( static) on the controller might as well not be present because once I hit them, it's either dim red or blackout
Again my controller is the ADJ RGB3 and the light is the one mentioned in the original post.
Any help is appreciated.

now that i think about it the cheapest controller you can use is the actuall light itself
if you are connecting them via dmx cable, but to me that defeats the purpose of the mod
anyway set all lights to slave mode keep the master @ the dj table set colors strobe go sound active ……what ever you do with that one light the rest will follow

Here is a fixture with a similar housing but with 7x10w RGBW. I imagine the same type of modification could be done. Personally I like the look of the 4-in-1 LED better than the individual red, blue, and green diodes. Plus with the addition of white you can mix some nice pastel tones and softer colors. But at around $50ea. that is about twice the cost.

Just got the lights I ordered last week (par 86s)
They are bright as a very small footprint.. Sadly I think they are also 7 ch so my cheap ass co triller don't do didly... But these are strictly for Uplighting so no big deal, they have the dip switches on the back
m.ebay.com
And they are 2 prong so I may order a few singles for the mod. Will update if I do.

The plus side of this par is that it does white. If you've ever done a wedding, having uplights that do a great white color is essential. Yes, the RGB's can mix color to make others but the whites are not that pure...

cool thanks, if it last 6 hours you are good, remember my advice make them then sell them for double continue to do so make that profit
than once you've made enough buy the name brand ones , i think you can put them on CL for $110 doubling your money
i haven't had any issues the battery sits right under the light & it to big to put inside, it can however be stuck to the side with glue or velcro , you wont even know it's there

So your 70W link has the pigtail power... do you think this IEC power in/out type can do this same cheapo battery trick: www.ebay.com
^^^ No pigtail power cord on it so one would have to go inside the unit and hopefully find the positive/negative wires.

But at around $50ea. that is about twice the cost.[b][b]

Any luck with the U.S. Based sellers for the battery pack?
Tracking this shipping from China is as much fun as watching paint dry.
And whoever did the mod with the IEC type connection, can you please detail what to do after opening the light.... Thanks.

not hard the wires coming out of the transformer step the power down to 12volts Red / Black wires are the ones you tie into i'm considering bypassing the fan with a switch as these lights are low voltage and generate no heat the fan is for the Transformer which being bypassed won't get hot...

I've been scanning through this thread for... a second. I do own a few of those lights already and have a couple battery packs laying around. To answer the quoted question, yes, Chauvet actually sells their battery packs for the Freedom series lights. A bit more expensive, but I got two of them within the week with no hassles. Also, you might want to check "Batteries Plus" stores. They can actually build battery packs for you! Also, most hobby shops that sell RC cars and stuff will build battery packs too.

Uhhh... don't do that. These lights WILL over heat! I know the fans on these cheap lights aren't the best, but clipping them will do more harm and possible destroy the chip set. You can replace the fans quite cheaply with smaller (quieter) 40mm fans from Amazon or Ebay, but it does need a fan.

Hey not to be a pain, but got a few ??
I went ahead and opened up the light and unscrewed the IEC connection, now I see 3 cables attached, 1 red and 1 black (over each other) and then a 2nd red (soldered) to the other side. I trace the red and black (over each other) to the other side of the unit to a motherboard type thing... So I'm assuming those are the + and - I need to attach to the adapter correct?
I know we're probably making this harder than it is, we (well myself at least) are new to this stuff, but it does seem easy.
Thanks

i don't see what a regular o clap or c clamp wouldn't work?
one that would give us wireless battery powered dmx control over the mod i already did @ a decent price point

Update: My light bags came in. Love them!!!!!
First the "bad" news. The lights we have won't fit in the bag the way they're meant to fit in there. In other words, horizontally spread.
The GOOD NEWS. The lights WILL FIT in the bag if you stack them in 2's. And... since the dividers that come inside the bag are velcro'ed in place, you can use just 1 divider to separate the first two lights, and the other 2 dividers to protect the lights as you stack them on top of each other.
Look at these pictures so you can see what I mean.
This picture shows 3 lights already in the bag showing how the velcro/cushioned dividers are used.
erbmagazine.com
This picture shows all 4 lights in the bag. I put the lights and the power cables inside the bag for easy access as those are the only things I will be using for now. The metal brackets and the DMX cables are on the side pockets.
erbmagazine.com
And this last picture, shows everything inside and close. Ready to go. It fits perfectly.
erbmagazine.com
If you only have 9 lights, these bags will fit 3 lights the way they were meant to be placed inside. Or, it will actually fit 4 lights that are slim. Our lights are not really slim.... but glad they fit as I mentioned above.
Great purchase in my opinion. Now my cheap investment is already protected.

Here's the pic I took from last night's gig...
Disregard the cable system. I wouldn't do this at a wedding... but at a bar... I. don't. care. lol
Oh yeah, I'm playing videos too... so check out that white HDMI cable. :P
erbmagazine.com
The place isn't big so this is what I used.
1 Technics MK5G
1 Rane 64
1 MBP (Duh)
1 15" PRX 500 (placed in one corner of the dance floor - we talked about this placement before.
1 12" PRX 500 (monitor placed behind me in another corner)
4 uplights
1 Revo III aimed at the ceiling.
The sound was perfect for this venue - I've played here before many times so I know exactly the best placement of the speakers and what to bring. Placing both 15 and 12 in the corners gives awesome bass output on the dance floor area. No one notices the 12 behind me so they always wonder how one 15" gives such great sound. :P

so for another $10 you can make the light completely wireless ,you can use the included remote or you can even use an app
play.google.com
so basically it an RGB controller & remote that used to control those led light strips & it works great ,you have total control over the light it even does more colors with the controller
this is similar to what was used but not the exact one (i'll post it as soon as i find it) www.amazon.com what you do is completely remove the controller thats built into the back of the light & replace it with this
it's pretty simple as all the wires are marked RGB & + - for power ,the mod also eliminates the need for this adaptor www.ebay.com as the irc recover wire also has one built in
i'll post some pick & a video soon along with the correct controller

So i went ahead and bought 16 of these lights just to play around with.
At first the housing seems kind of "flimsy" or rather very light weight - like if they were dropped they could break very easily, but just be careful and probably will be fine.
I haven't done the battery mod yet but even just as a simple par64 fixture they seem to work well when responding to DMX. Here is a quick video I made with 8 of them hooked up to ShowXpress running some chase/scenes that I programmed in the step editor:

Btw, stupid me dropped one of those lights the other night and luckily nothing happened to it. It landed hard too. My brother dropped one of my Revo's from like 10 ft up lol and the lens popped out but didn't break anything. That's why I love LED's... They don't break too easily.

I did a side by side comparison with a chauvet slimpar56 and they are about equal.
(except the blue seems a bit dim)
Also I noticed the type of paint on the wall affects the brightness. A matte finish allows for rich, bright colors - while a glossy finish seems to reflect the light which seems to diminish the amount of color wash.

The OP sounds strange to me, that you wouldn't have to crack open the fixture to pull out the ACDC adapter inside. The electronics run on 12VDC but the connector is a standard AC, which means there's an adapter between the connector and the electronics. My old cans have actual plastic enclosed AC adapters (like the 'brick' in the middle of your laptop power cable).
Anyway, to go wireless DMX with it, I got a few of these at under $20 each:
Transmitter: www.ebay.com
Receiver: www.ebay.com
They've been working pretty good, even at about 30 feet with people in between for me. You can get a cheap 1AH 5VDC cellphone battery pack and a USB to 3.5mm DC jack cable to power the receivers. Otherwise, you'll have to split, and build a stepdown in the 12v circuit to power both the DFi and the fixture with your 12v battery.
Also, uDMX and Freestyler is probably the cheapest way to get into DMXing. It's a USB dongle that runs about $16 and Freestyler is a open source light design program. If you program your own Macros, you can do some advanced stuff with the fixtures that you already have.
Hope this is helpful to someone out there.

Hey guys,
First of all this thread is great! SO stoked to get some battery powered uplights!!
My question: I know it's been asked a couple times, but I haven't seen a straight answer on here yet: How do the 1W lights compare to the 3W lights? Are 1W not bright enough? Are 3W too bright?
And more importantly... do the 3W lights make the battery not last as long? I'm picturing a longer event where the uplights suddenly start dying out, one by one... *shudders*
Hoping to order soon... please help! Thanks

Thanks @Joee. How does the wattage affect battery life?
Scully DJ Services
12:49 AM - 9 February, 2016
The higher the wattage, the more power that the fixture will consume. If there is a 3W light and a 1W light that are both hooked into identical batteries, then theoretically the 1W should last 3x longer. This most likely isn't the case in real world appilications though due to many other variables, but you get the idea.

here is what you will need to make the light wireless remote control
www.amazon.com
here are some pics inside two i opened up

you can remove all electronics on the inside if you want you don't need them including the fan, if you want to dmx link any lights you will need to leave that in tact , if not remove it
i even found a smaller baterie that fits inside & last about 5 hours

It worked for an hour, then started turning off, then back on, and repeat. Any idea why? Is it a warning that it's about to die? or blow up

Like I asked above...are you using full brightness or are you dimming it?
I have 7 of these lights built the exact same way you to, 18x1w, I have drained the batteries, recharged to full and they are lasting 2.5-3 hours at FULL brightness.
Are you dimming the brightness to get 6 hours? Because I am guessing that you are hence doubling the light time.

I got a couple of these lights that y'all listed long ago; now I'm trying to connect them to a small lighting board (A Chauvet Obey 3) but once I connect the board, all the blue LEDs go off (the red and green work fine). So. Once you replace the power cord with the adapter can you still plug the light into a wall socket or is the light now officially only battery powered?

That's is a very good question. I just got a pair of rgbw uplights at a Max 24w battery consumption. So I figure the battery will last at least 8 hours. But I was thinking that the power board is a 12v output, so I am assuming that you possibly could rig the battery charge port to the the power out of the power board of the that is in the light itself. It’s a working theory, but again, not an electrician.

I tried the 7x10w lights.
www.ebay.com
Even plugged into a wall, they suck. They're dimmer than my 25w ADJ Tri Par Profile Plus lights. Moreover, it's 24v to the PCB, so they would run at half power on 12v batteries. I want something super bright that will cut through daylight since most venues in Tahoe have tons of windows overlooking the lake. I may try the 54w pars people have talked about on this thread since they're less than $14 now. I have a 20,000mAh battery, but I'm guessing it will only last 4 to 5 hours.

That's not possible. These batteries don't have inverters to convert the current from DC to AC. Once you add that, things get expensive. It's much cheaper to run power straight to the PCB and keep the current DC.
