I used to have three versions of my playlists. All of the playlists were built around my style but they were customized for the audience differences. My first set was a no-risk playlist that would go well with a "normal" audience. My second set was meant for audiences that were less mainstream and less tolerant of played-out songs. My third set was meant for gigs where I had both younger and more mature people in the audiences.
Do any of you guys build your playlists by studying the audiences first? How do you do the research on the crowd at your upcoming gigs?
