-1 Video first. Any old PC with your SL1 can multitrack record. If you're not going to record a live 1 shot mix, then might as well just make the whole project in Acid, Logic, ProTools, Audition, etc. You don't need turntables to make a multitrack mix.

Been waiting for this since the day I got a 57 out of batch 1 over a year ago, and discovered it didn't exist as was expected. And what about the EFX and pitch n time!?!?
But I still have to say, Rane/Serato are amazing. Start reading through the feature suggestion thread, and see how many things on there they handled in a very timely manner. Multitracking, PnT and EFX are the only really major ones that still need love. Things like sticker drift, subcrates, loops, etc. We have and most likely already take for granted.

I'm wondering if this issue could be included with another in the same vein. seems like for mixing, I can't get a crossfader curve that I really like. Its as if the 57 was made with just scratching in mind. the ability to have a more mix freindly crossfader curve would be a nice add as well.

...hmmmm....just picked up an SL1 for a gig this weekend and I'm starting to wonder...if I start Cubase with the TTM57 on and the ASIO port is locked in, can I then start SSL using the SL1 and use the TTM57 simply as an ASIO sound card, and the SL1 as the SSL source?

now that i think about it, that feature would be awesome. I was makin a mixtape today, i kept making tiny mistakes, and overall, on tape...mistakes are super noticable.
Multitracking would put the nail in the coffin of everymixer on the planet.
I wonder if thats even possible. sounds like it would use an awful lot of ram or "whatever" lol

What is multitracking?? is that the crazy impossible blend i always hear on mix cd's that i cant duplicate unless i had three decks?? The one where deck one has a accapella and deck two has an instrumental and deck two scratches in another instrumental before deck one has finished the accapella? I could be totally off on this :)

I've been able to accomplish the MIXTAPE dream only with the addition of the breakout box along side the 57SL. I basically would plug the 57SL to a seperate machine running Cubase. That machine is able to track channel 1 and 2 seperately. Then I'd plug in the laptop with Serato into the breakout box and wire it up to the 57 via regular RCA outs. At the moment due to a USB Bandwidth issue, you cannot record 2 stereo channels and run scratch live on the same USB cable, so my setup above seemed the only way to accomplish this.
Today Im working on another mixtape but wont need both channels tracked seperately so Im going to experiment with cubase on the same laptop as Serato and see if I can track one turntable at a time. The problem is, the ASIO driver is fussy. My laptop now doesn't see the 57 as it should, they are just showing up as USB audio under device manager.
Im running XP home, and today Im trying the beta 1.7.4. Sound quality is definately much better by the wat, especially the TIME STRETCH. WOW, all the up and down the pitch range I dont hear almost any artifacts when using the KEY feature.

The 57 ASIO drivers are unfinished at best. I have issues with them keeping the sync on the PC, which makes them completely useless for me. On the Mac it is a little bit better, but then we dont have a way how to tell the coraAudio drivers which channel is pre/post/mix/aux a.k.a no source routing. Wack. However, Cubase on it works okay.
What is really bad is... right now this is far away from a DJ's mixtape dream. Faaar. We can't record via the TTM57 while we use SSL. So right now, I have to go the same sucky route as Naydee... via two computers. One is running the SL1, the other is recording the TTM57SL audio.

if the demand for mixtapes died then i could stop waiting. prior to the mixer launching over a year ago, there was this expectation that we could do this. i hope serato gets the 1.7.4 issues sorted and can get back to developing new features. Godspeed to our Serato team.

Yes, on PC you have two options depending on what your multitrack tool supports. You can use ASIO or windows audio. You'll need a program that supports recording from two inputs at the same time or supports ASIO. I use Adobe Audition which used to be Cooledit pro. CoolEdit pro and Adobe Audition 1.x support windows sound and Audition 2.0 supports ASIO.
I'm not sure if there is a free package that supports recording from two inputs, I've checked Audacity but it doesn't seem to have this function.

Nevermind, I saw the other thread.
On a seperate note, I see that "it's coming", however there were posts asking for it over a year ago. So at what point do they let us know when exactly its coming?
I don't know about anyone else, but a main selling point for this mixer to me was that video where the guy labeled it a mixtaper's dream with the multi-track recordings. How can you still advertise a video saying its included that was made a while ago, yet still hear no new news?
I use ableton frequently and am very dissapointed to find this out.
Although This mixer and Serato technology is amazing in general and i'm very satisfied, it irritates me to be fed false advdertising at the same time. It would be nice to get a response from someone from Rane to at least explain the situation.

i think those who bought it on the grounds that certain things would be implemented should come before those that bought it and then started thinking what would be a cool new feature.

having full control over the audio even after the performance
too me, that would hardly keep it from being called a 'mixtape'
even if you want to apply some orthodoxy on the matter, I dont see why Rane would or should. there is a demand, and it was said to be implemented
plus there are plenty of other reasons a DJ might want multi-outs other then just doctoring mixtapes. for example I would like to use it for song production. mixdown on A, scratch on B, and line it up after I get the performance right. -that doesnt break any rules right?

the fact of the matter is, as consumers, we bought something under the grounds that a feature was going to be implemented. all the torret syndrome commenters telling us we 'should just get this' or 'we should just do that' does not change the fact that we have paid money for something to do what we want and we should not have to pay out MORE money to get this. we should get what we're ALREADY paid for, not have to look elsewhere for a solution.
the fact that they are ignoring this subject makes it 10 times worse in my opinion. if its not a big deal, and other updates are more important, then i'd like to know where i can get a refund. i'll go out and spend the money on a mixer i can use.

Yeah if it can't be done it can't be done, but let us know. One of the reasons I bought this was for this feature. I do recording for dj's and clean their mix up in logic or pro tools throw in effects and stuff. So when I first heard that this mixer would split the channels it was perfect for me. Pretty P off that Rane refuses to comment, Let us know Rane, I love my mixer but I was lied too. It's like going to the club and hooking up with a hot chick and then realizing she had the biggest wonderbra she could find on. Sure it's fun to play with but it's not the same!

this argument belongs in another thread....
but there are half a billion people out there who dont buy mixtapes because of the DJs skill (if its even a dj). If its a demo of your skill or thats what people want the tape for, your skills, sure... but thats not the ONLY reason for mixtapes. and its not the only reason for this function, there are various other reasons... you want an editable work flow, use it as a production tool, who knows what, maybe you just want to add a song that just dropped without doing the whole mix over... there are 100 other reasons for this feature other then 'cheating' -recognize, its not a tool for cheating, and was never meant to be. SSL should ease back with this idea of cheating, or go back to vinyl and tape

Yes ancientyouth It's a tool to be used for production or whatever, even if dj's want to use it do doctor up their mixes big deal. This thread is a plead for the function. Anyways I don't know too many DJ's making a living selling mixtapes.

This thread is a pretty poor advertisment for Rane, ZERO input from them apart from a sarcastic comment on september 4th 2007...

Hi guys,
Sorry about the absence from this thread - time for us to come and face the music.
When we first released the 57, we had dreams of being able to record PGM 1 and PGM 2 post fader, both at the same time. This would mean that you'd be able to record your set, and put each of the decks into a separate channel on your multitrack audio editor... which would be very very cool.
Unfortunately, it has become clear that we just don't have the bandwidth to pass that much audio back to the computer. We've tried various elaborate schemes to get this to work, but they are just not working. We have hit the limit of how much audio we can squeeze down the pipe, and we need a complete redesign in order to get this to work.
"We" in this case is Serato, not Rane. The problem is a combination of software and hardware, but the claims of multitrack recording came from Serato.
We are sincerely sorry that we are unable to deliver this feature.

Well my fellow SSL's at least we have our answer. Now Serato/Rane personally I think we deserve a little "sorry for the bad information". My suggestion is lock this thread and everyone who contributed should be given a set of white vinyl's....I'm not asking for the air force 1 or the white serato box, although maybe a coupon to get a backup ssl box for a really nice discount would be nice too since we already have a 57.
How about it guys, how about a little something to lick my wounds.

Sam - if Rane had chosen USB 2.0 would this alleviate the problem? Or is it deeper than that? Any hope with the Ableton/Serato partnership?

I feel sick! I appreciate the answer, finally after years of silence on the subject but it just feels like a slap in the face.
Anyway, i'm sure we'll get over it, especially if the "serableton" answers that need. Hopefully we wont have to wait for a ttm58. Either way, its a MAJOR dent in the trust rapport a lot of us had towards the brand, which until now was impeccable.
Anyway, in an attempt to find a solution and move on from this dark chapter, I have a question:
"is it possible to plug a SL1 into the 57, therefore using the analog outputs in order to achieve the multi-tracking. We wouldn't be able to use the 57 to control loops, cue points... but we could still use the effects right and obviously the straight mixer functions?"

sorry, but that is no comfort at all.
2 years to get an answer and the first one we get is to tell us all we've been ripped off. and the answers you come up with is 'oh well, at least we can buy another piece of gear to do a half assed job of what we wanted to do in the first place'
wonderful.
Sam, I'm still waiting for a reply to the PM.

nik, is there a thread or tutorial anywhere on how to set this up?
Also, I'm assuming that based on this theroy I can multitrack with a 57 and just vynal?
I tired setting up Cubase to with my 57 to have Post fader A on one channel and Post Fader B on the other but couldn't get it going, it just gave me the final mix output :(

Yes, kind of. Instead of vinyl I am using an SL1.
Use the Rane recording tool so setup ASIO1 to PGM1 postfader and ASIO2 to PGM2 postfader.

when the bridge is made available (no eta yet) it will be free, but only if you have SL and Ableton Live 8 or Suite 8.

actually... i said afraid not, but i saw the bridge video.
looks like ableton doesnt need to be open, it saves an .als file directly, complete with automation.
you then open the als file, and it has all the tracks, the tempo shifts, fader movements (IF you use a 57 or 68).... etc.
this would suggest to me, there should be a way of opening it in live lite... so id say there probably is 'hope'.... at least to output the mix, even if not to see an ableton view in the sl window.
